Kernel driver that boots with Windows and requires Secure Boot on Windows 11. It hunts injected code and vulnerable drivers; plain windows drawn over the game — Discord, Steam, OBS class — are not what it flags.

Every verdict here is about one thing: a plain always-on-top window — the Discord/Steam/OBS class — drawn over your game. Which anti-cheat each game runs, whether it is kernel-level, and what the evidence says. 48 games, checked against sources.

| No match. Try the anti-cheat name (EAC, BattlEye, Vanguard…) — or if the game has no client anti-cheat at all, a plain always-on-top window is a non-issue by default. | ||||
Verdicts apply to plain always-on-top overlay windows only — not to injected overlays, ReShade-class graphics hooks, or anything that reads game data. Full reasoning and honest caveats: will a coding overlay get me banned?
Anti-cheat does not care that something is drawn over the game. It cares what touches the game. Three behaviors account for essentially every overlay-adjacent ban:
Loading code into the game process — how cheats, and also injected overlays like Discord’s in-game overlay, draw inside the game. This is the surface anti-cheat scans hardest.
Reading the game’s memory to extract positions, loot, or cooldowns — radar hacks, ESP, and “information overlays.” Bannable everywhere, and rightly so.
Software pressing keys or moving the mouse for you — aimbots, macros, bots. The oldest ban category in the book.
It is a separate window the OS draws above the game — no hook, no injection, no game memory, no synthetic input. That is why it works over borderless fullscreen (and why exclusive fullscreen hides it — an OS rule, not an anti-cheat one).
Backgrind is a plain always-on-top window — no injection, no memory reading, no input automation. It floats your AI coding agent over the game and pings you only when the agent needs you. Grind with your agents between matches.
Fifteen systems cover all 48 games. Click a game to jump to its verdict page.
Riot Games
Kernel driver that boots with Windows and requires Secure Boot on Windows 11. It hunts injected code and vulnerable drivers; plain windows drawn over the game — Discord, Steam, OBS class — are not what it flags.
Epic Games
The most widely deployed kernel anti-cheat. It protects the game process against injection and tampering; separate always-on-top windows are outside its scope and coexist with it in hundreds of titles.

BattlEye Innovations
Proactive kernel-level protection used across PUBG, Tarkov, Siege, Destiny 2 and more. It blocks code that hooks the game (ReShade-class injectors can fail to launch); plain overlay windows are unaffected.

Valve
User-mode, signature- and behavior-based, with delayed ban waves. Trusted mode blocks DLLs injected into the game; it has never targeted windows drawn over the game.
Activision
Kernel driver that loads only while a Call of Duty title runs, plus server-side machine learning. Overlay windows in the Discord/OBS class are explicitly tolerated; injection is what it exists to catch.
Electronic Arts
EA’s kernel anti-cheat (Secure Boot required) that loads at Windows boot. Effective against cheats, but 2026 brought documented false-positive “gameplay enhancement” bans on setups running OBS-class overlay software.
FACEIT (ESL FACEIT Group)
The strictest mainstream client: a kernel driver with an allowlist mindset. Official builds of OBS and Discord are supported; unrecognized software tends to be blocked from running alongside it rather than banned.
Blizzard Entertainment
Blizzard’s two-decade-old user-mode scanner (surfaced as the Defense Matrix initiative in Overwatch 2). It examines the game’s own memory space for known cheats; other windows on your desktop are not its business.
INCA Internet
An aggressive kernel guard best known from Korean MMOs and Helldivers 2. It is notorious for killing overlay hooks and false-positive launch failures — friction, not bans, and plain windows that never hook the game are unaffected.
Roblox
A user-mode anti-tamper layer wrapped around the Roblox client. It stops code from being injected into Roblox itself and does not police other windows on the desktop.
Tencent
Tencent’s kernel anti-cheat used by Delta Force. Documented to conflict with other kernel software and to keep its services installed after the game is uninstalled; plain overlay windows work, but the driver is famously touchy.
NetEase
NetEase’s in-house protection, used by Marvel Rivals. Community analysis places a kernel component on disk, and there are documented false-positive bans tied to third-party overlay suites.
343 Industries / Halo Studios
Halo Infinite’s proprietary anti-cheat, deliberately built without a kernel driver — detection happens server-side and in user mode. Overlay windows are a non-issue by design.
HoYoverse
HoYoverse’s kernel driver, shipped with Genshin Impact. It targets memory tampering in a mostly co-op game; standard overlays and always-on-top windows run alongside it without incident.
Various (Jagex, CCP, GGG, Square Enix, Mojang…)
No client-side anti-cheat at all: cheating is judged from behavior on the server. Nothing on your machine watches your windows, so any overlay — including a plain always-on-top terminal — is invisible to it.
Final Fantasy XIVOld School RuneScapeEVE OnlineMinecraftPath of ExilePath of Exile 2The Elder Scrolls OnlineGuild Wars 2
A plain always-on-top window — the Discord/Steam/OBS class — is not what anti-cheat looks for. Bans come from DLL injection into the game, reading game memory, and automating input. Of the 48 games we track, 0 block or ban a plain overlay window; the handful marked “caution” have documented friction or false-positive incidents, which each game page links as evidence.
No — and the difference matters. Discord’s in-game overlay injects a DLL into the game process to draw inside it, which is why some anti-cheats (GameGuard, FACEIT) fight it. A plain always-on-top window draws entirely outside the game process: no hook, no injection. It is strictly less invasive than the overlays most anti-cheats already whitelist.
An anti-cheat that loads a driver with system-level access, usually before the game (and sometimes at Windows boot, like Vanguard and Javelin). 32 of the 48 games here use one. Kernel access lets it detect cheat drivers and injection — it does not mean windows drawn over the game are banned; every major kernel anti-cheat coexists with the standard overlay ecosystem.
That is exclusive fullscreen, not anti-cheat. In exclusive fullscreen the game owns the display and every overlay vanishes at the OS level. Switch the game to borderless (windowed) fullscreen — a one-time graphics setting — and overlays draw on top normally.
Each verdict is specifically about plain always-on-top overlay windows, based on three inputs: how the anti-cheat technically works (what it scans), the developer’s official stance, and documented incidents (forum and official threads, linked as evidence on every game page with a last-checked date). “Caution” means documented friction or false positives exist — not that overlays are against the rules.
No — never disable an anti-cheat. You do not need to (plain windows coexist with every system here), and disabling it just locks you out of online play. If a specific overlay conflicts with a specific game, the fix is to close that overlay, not to touch the anti-cheat.
